rebecca: right now, we are in a2,600 square foot apartment with a very open living room, and dining room, and kitchen. when we first moved in,it was a disaster. the couple that had lived herebefore had very different taste than we did. my name's rebecca. thank god i hired a designer. so i knew that i neededa decorator. and i had read about fawn galliin "domino" magazine in
a story on ten decorators towatch in the new year. fawn galli: this space was oneof the worst spaces i've ever seen in my whole entire life. it was full of old woodfurniture, burgundy colors, dark leathers. and it just felt heavy, andold, and depressing. rebecca: i knew that we wanteda space that was comfortable for a family withtwo small kids. but i didn't want the childrento dominate the space.
fawn galli: i always try andmake them go a little bit further than they wouldnormally do. and i think that that's whatthey're hiring me to do. rebecca: originally, i wasnot that into the hot pink thing at all. fawn galli: i think she wasunsure about the hot pink. i convinced her to put itin her living room and incorporate it intoher interior. rebecca: within like, onemeeting with fawn, she had
convinced me. she said that they love pink andthey use it all the time. fawn galli: hot pink has thiskind of, it can be preppy, but then it can be kindof sexy and fun. that's hot pink and fuchsia. it's not like a girly pink. it can be like, an urbanliving room. rebecca: we like to entertain. specifically, have familiesover for brunch.
so we needed a place that wecould host people and did not feel overrun with toysand high chairs. fawn galli: i mean, this isbasically the public space to have all of their needs andreflect all of their personalities. rebecca: my husband found thetable at an environmentally friendly furniture store. he convinced all of us itwas his idea, the table. and i think it's great.
and we get lots of complimentson it. fawn galli: the brownsofas were really meant as a backdrop. i try and balance the darkand the light [inaudible] obviously, and the brown carpetin order to pull some of the light out of the room. these are all vintagechairs from ebay. these chairs. and they reupholstered them.
the light was selected tohave a modern feeling to it and set the tone. this is a modern family. rebecca: cool concepts isalso in our building. and they basically designedthese bookshelves. we gave them the measurements, and they laid them out on the computer. fawn galli: i don't thinkthat i have better taste than other people.
it's just i've been doing itfor so many years, so i've learned from my mistakes. i think it's important to havean interior that makes sense, that tells a story. especially in urbanliving, where it's so crazy and frenetic. if you can come into your homeand feel like, it's kind of soothing if it allmakes sense. rebecca: i had so many pagespulled from magazines of
different inspirationsfor the apartment. paint colors, fabrics, couches i liked. but i had no idea how topull it all together. tracy metro: are you asocial media darling? do you like to hang out onfacebook, twitter, pinterest, or even tumblr. if so, you can check us outat all those places. or of course, you can just clicksubscribe right here to see what we've got going on.
