honey, i'm home! how was your day dear? swell! and yours? oh, you know, i sewed a few pieces for my independent business, i rewired the lamp in the living room i performed and herb-rap, and i made us an atomic startburst mirror that's my girl! hello and welcome to decor-it-yourself, 1950s edition! a few months ago i did a threadbanger blog post that was a round-up of the coolest diy projects from apartment therapy's february jump start contest
allison's starburst mirror was one of the projects you viewers wanted to see on the show so here's a tutorial on an 1950s inspired starburst mirror for this project you will need: one medium sized mirror ours is 8 inches in diameter and we got it at our local craft store a piece of cardboard sixteen 16 inch dowel rods sixteen 10 inch bamboo skewers galvanized wire
a hot glue gun and plenty of glue sticks a paint brush and 1-step liquid leaf. ours is pewter and, round mosaic mirrors in 3 sizes we're using 16 large, 32 medium, and 32 small first, using a handmade compass, made a cardboard circle the same size as your mirror make it a smidgen smaller because it will be the back piece and you don't wanna see it with a ruler, divide the disk into 16 equal parts like cutting a pie with your hot glue gun, attack the 16 inch dowels to each line about half an inch up from the center then take the skewers and attach them 1 1/2 inches down from the edge in between each dowel
to have 2 different types and lengths coming out from the center now you're gonna paint both sides of your piece so you wanna elevate it to prevent the paint from sticking the table's protective paper. once elevated, paint both sides with your liquid leaf after the entire piece is dry, use your galvanized wire to create a hanging loop by feeding it through two holes in the front and twisting it in the back then, add a couple dabs of hot glue to reinforce the holes next, hot glue your center mirror to the cardboard, hiding the dowel ends now take your little mirrors and glue them onto the front of the dowels start with the large mirrors, and glue one to the end of each long dowel
next, take the medium sized mirrors and glue one to the end of each shorter skewer now, on the long dowel, measure down 3 inches from the large mirror and glue a medium mirror then, measure down 3 inches from the medium mirror on the shorter skewers and glue one small mirror lastly, measure down 3 1/2 inches from the medium mirror on the large dowel and glue on a small mirror repeat until each dowel and skewer has this pattern on it hang the wire loop on a nail, and...viola!
