scheduled to decide the fate of that theater. a city task force says it's time to scrap the old theater and build an entirely new one. adrian moore is in the newsroom with the group saying not so fast. reporter: christina and sam


right now, the theater is used about 100 days out of the year, but a group calling themselves transform 916 says fixing it up could make it an even bigger draw, and they like to stretch construction out of the summer months when the theater is dark.


reporter: it's the home to the touring broadway acts like newsies. and the sacramento ballet, and celebrity speaker series. now many say the 42-year-old community center theater is beyond its best days. we've got issues from the


front to the back. reporter: a group calling itself transform 916 is asking the city to expand with the larger glass enclosed lobby, better lighting and acoustics. the restroom facilities are woefully inadequate. upgrading the bathrooms


would be offer. upgrading the facility takes care of all of those complaints. reporter: but some are concerned about the cost. i think it's fine. i don't see why we need a new one.


reporter: last year, a mayoral task force recommended building a brand new $200 million theater, in a new downtown location with variable seating that could accommodate smaller performances. but renovation supporters say the theater is already in the


best spot, and building a new one could cost three times more than fixing the current one. a brand new theater. sounds wonderful. but this will be a brand new theater. that building has great bones, good infrastructure.


reporter: supporters say money for the renovations can come from a surcharge that is already placed on each ticket that's sold as well as the
