hi, welcome to the handyverse the last time in our first vlog ever we talked about the wall behind us and today, we're going to tackle the wall. stick with us so i'm going to start by removing the temporary pictures on the wall. jason's doing that right now so that we can do some test configurations up on the wall behind us so we can decide what it is that we want to actually put on the wall. we're not sure yet we gave ourselves a deadline in the last vlog to do our videos about every two weeks. we're about a week in so we only have a few days left really to get this project complete so we need to be efficient we were busy working on our new website where you can check it out, and get some free plans. we will put those up as we get a chance right now
we have two and they link in correspond a couple of videos that we've already posted. we were also busy celebrating canada's one hundred and fiftieth birthday with a friend and so we were busy doing that living life a little bit, but now back to work fixing the wall, so we want to put a picture up on the wall a picture a few shelves so suzanne saw a picture that had it was a couple of zebras and it was used a low polygon effect to make the picture and it was something she really liked but we want to make it our own, so
suzanne was in africa and last year and she she has her own pictures of some zebras, so we're going to use that we're going to edit those make them low-poly and we need to figure out a way to frame it. so when we were away this weekend we we went to a few antique shops and we got some ideas on how to frame it from old pictures that were there so we're going to do that while we were there we also saw some kind of creepy things and we also saw a chaise that was just begging to be costanza'd so uh
yeah, so that's going to be our approach of this we're going to start by putting some tape up on the wall and just seeing how we're going to lay them out we decided on a configuration that we think we're happy with. the true test will be when we make the picture and make some shelves to put some things up, so we reduced the size of the picture we were going to do poster size 2 feet by 3 feet but just try to make it work on the wall we weren't happy with it so what we're going to do is make a sixteen by twenty picture instead and then we're going to have these two shelves for smaller pictures, plants, things like that, so what's next?
we have to create the... make the picture so here we have the picture that suzanne took in africa of the zebra. here's a reference picture that were this gives us the look that we're going for so what i've done is i've already scaled this image up to to a higher resolution so to print it at sixteen by twenty inches and the reason i did it beforehand is because we're going to draw polygons over it and we want those to already be at the resolution needed for print size. so we're going to turn on the grid zoom in and we're going to start on the head over here and
we're going to simply use the polygonal lasso tool and start outlining our zebra and what we can do is when we close a loop i have an action created so when i hit f2 it will automatically create a new layer with that selection, blur it, and add a line around it now since this takes hours, i'm going to go into super fast mode here until i have both zebras outlined with polygons and that took a little bit longer than expected, but we have something that turned out reasonably well if you would like to see a more in-depth tutorial on this just let us know, drop a comment
and we'll see what we can do. so let's go back over to the living room and we'll plan the next part the living room here, this is where the picture is going to go and we have two shelves to build. i'm going to take a break from working on the picture and i'm going to do these shelves we're just going to simple, narrow shelves to hold smaller pictures on the wall so i'm going to do that today because suzanne is off work tomorrow and she'll have a chance to do work on that so in order to get this thing done. that's the kind of stuff we have to deal with and
so the top shelf is going to be 5 feet long according to our master plan here with the painters tape and then this shelf is about three and a half feet long so unfortunately we won't get it out of one 8 foot board, but but that's okay, so we can look for longer 10 foot boards or a couple of 6-foot boards for each shelf yeah, i've got all my boards cut i cut one by three inch boards for the back and the bottom piece and
then a one by two board i cut for trim around the front of it so what i'm going to now is drill some pilot holes in the back to put screws into the base and i'm going to use finish nails to put the front the face on the trim and and then drill three holes in this piece to allow me to hang it on the wall so jason finished building the shelf and i'm the the putty master, so i'm going to putty it, let it dry we're going to run to home depot and hopefully it's dry by the time we get back then throw it up on the wall and then paint it while it's on the wall sticky fingers! okay, so now we're going to mount the picture. we have great use for a sewing cutting mat here
i'm going to use it to mark the spots of the plexiglas for the holes we want to put in except this marker doesn't write on it okay, i haven't drilled into plexiglas before so this should be interesting i've heard you can try drilling through with the drill going backwards to burn through as opposed to drilling to prevent cracking so i'm gonna try that first that worked like a charm are you going to be able to get that off? yeah, backseat driver...
so we couldn't get the standoffs that we want it in time to do this project, so we went to home depot and we improvised what we're going to do is use these screws, two fender washers the plexiglass is going to go in the middle here we're going to use the nuts of spacers to keep it off the wall we're going to decide if we're to put one or two on and then we're just gonna put wall anchors right into the wall so we're going to use this to hold up the plexiglass frame till we get the proper ones in that we want to use just using the static to get rid of any dust. i have my alignment arrows here on the plastic
but i'm about to take that off so i don't want to change the orientation once i once i pull this plastic off so now we want to secure the picture on the backing plate and here's where this sewing mat comes in very handy because we can use the squares to line it up make sure it's in the middle it's as easy as that. now we want to put a little bit glue on the back here just along the top so now before i put this piece on, i'm going to use it to mark the holes in the wall where i want to put my drywall anchors so, that turned out alright. our little makeshift standoffs worked surprisingly well. i think we're still gonna switch them out with the the real ones, but this works for now
now that we have this up we realize that this shelf is probably a little bit too high so we're going to move this down a little bit and then attach the shelves to the wall the wall's up i think it looks pretty cool and i'm loving my cactus plants which i don't have to water very often. so if you like this video, hit subscribe and catch us on the next project. oh
