all right, let's go. you can take me home. this way? ok so tell me, your friends wholive in brooklyn, their places are all amazing? shelby: well specifically inthis area, off the morgan l, it's all basically oldconverted factories. so you have to get creative. otherwise it's like you'reliving in a warehouse.

arden myrin: and are therea lot of different spaces where you live? jimmy: yeah, it's just reallyamazing, because all the doors look the same in the hallway. and then as soon as you walkin you're in a completely different space of whatyou're used to. arden myrin: so every person hascarved it out differently? jimmy: exactly. arden myrin: and builttheir own area?

jimmy: yeah. arden myrin: ok, i'm going toguess-- now, don't tell me. i'm going to guess and i don'twant to know if i'm right. huge ceilings, cement floors, lots of couches, books, rugs, animals, but like chic-- i believe there will bea kitten or a puppy. not like animals, like there'sdog shit everywhere. so this is it? shelby: yeah, it's too bad youguys weren't here sooner.

because a couple ofweeks ago this was covered in street art. they just painted over it. arden myrin: and whatare these called? shelby: so this themckibbin lofts. arden myrin: these arethe mckibbin lofts? arden myrin: ok, theseare legendary. shelby: the infamousmckibbin lofts. arden myrin: these are theinfamous mckibbin lofts.

ok, let's check it out. i like it already. shelby: so welcometo our home. arden myrin: oh, what? ok. this is awesome. shelby: thanks. arden myrin: ok, i loveall the globes at different heights.

shelby: i found theseall in the hallway. arden myrin: you did? shelby: yeah, one thing that'scool about this building is people will just leave stuffin the hallway for other people to take. arden myrin: wow, so you foundall of these in the hallway? shelby: literally everysingle globe. arden myrin: i lovethe candelabras. shelby: thanks, thesewere in my house

growing up as a child. this table was actually builtcustom for this house. arden myrin: it was? did one of the people wholived here build it? shelby: yes, but he hassince moved out. arden myrin: wait, so thisis just your dining area? shelby: yeah, so this is ourdining area, common area. arden myrin: wow, that's so cool. i love the shelvingwith the piping.

it's almost like froma plumbing piping. shelby: that's exactlywhat it is. we lived with these twoaustralian girls who have since moved out. both incredible artists. arden myrin: all right, i justwant to admit, i was right. there is a cat. can i just startout with that? is there one cat?

shelby: yes, one cat. who actually-- that park that we passedon the way here, i found her in that park. arden myrin: she's so cute. all right, well, show me a tourof the rest of the place. shelby: so this is ourkitchen over here. arden myrin: god, this is awesome. this is huge.

shelby: yeah. arden myrin: i love the giganticvase and the flowers. shelby: found iton the street. arden myrin: youfound all that? shelby: free 99, yeah. arden myrin: free 99? even with the flowers? shelby: yeah, totally. this was like decrepit, ugly colors, i

just painted it black. arden myrin: repurposing. and then i love the bottle art,i love the disco ball. arden myrin: and then i justnoticed, but when we came in there's a fencing maskon the wall. shelby: yeah, our friend'slittle brother is crashing with us for a few weeksand he fences, so he stuck that up there. arden myrin: how did youfind this place?

it's awesome. shelby: craigslist. arden myrin: just the roll thedice that you're going to like the seven peoplethat are here. were you nervous? shelby: no. i mean, i came, andi saw the space. it was very raw when we moved inhere, everything was white, very garage-y, totalwarehouse.

but i saw the potential ofit, and it was cheap. arden myrin: can i askyou a tacky question? arden myrin: does everybodypay the same amount? arden myrin: and howmuch is that? shelby: so each personpays $650, but that's all utilities included. arden myrin: why would younot want to move to the mckibbin lofts? shelby: i don't know.

arden myrin: thisis spectacular. i love the artwork over there. where did you get that? shelby: my grandmother paintedall of those paintings. arden myrin: really? all of them? arden myrin: they'rebeautiful. shelby: i agree. thanks.

arden myrin: and is thata bedroom over there? shelby: that is. that is my bedroom. arden myrin: oh, let'scheck it out. look at this. oh my god, i love it. black painted ceilings, fourchandeliers-- you don't have to have a big space to havefour chandeliers. now, did you build the loft?

shelby: no, i hired a hipstercarpenter to do this. arden myrin: how muchdid this cost you? shelby: it cost me $450. arden myrin: and i love that youstained-- did you stain it or he stained it? and then i built this closet andthis desk and the shelves. arden myrin: i wanteverybody to look. this is such a great use ofspace, because she has all of her jewelry just hanging on thewall, so well organized.

you have beautiful jewelry. arden myrin: it looksvintage-y, is most of that vintage? shelby: some of it is. some of it i've made, likei've made a couple of the rings that i'm wearingright now. arden myrin: you made that? arden myrin: how cool is that? look at that!

arden myrin: would you bewilling to show me downstairs? shelby: of course. arden myrin: all right, here we go. shelby: after you. arden myrin: thank you. i love that there's artall down the stairway! shelby: creative peoplelive here. arden myrin: thisis three floors? shelby: it is, indeed.

arden myrin: and you have asalon wall hung precariously. that is very brave ofyou, it's awesome. shelby: thank you. arden myrin: it wasworth the effort. shelby: so this is an artstudio, music studio, and just a lounge-- a hammock room. arden myrin: the hammock room. i like that. so how many hammocks doyou have in here?

shelby: we have three. arden myrin: this is awesome. i love all the macrame. i love the work studio. it's low to the ground, the ceiling is low. i think a lot of peoplemight feel it's claustrophobic or dark. and this couldn't be morewelcoming, or just the use of lights and the differentmagic.

like, you want to hangout in here. and these are three bedroomsright here? so that's our guest room which,if i showed you old pictures, that walldidn't exist. we built that. it was just like a weirdlittle nook. arden myrin: how awesome. i love that you guys have likea library over there. arden myrin: that's so cool.

it's awesome, you guys havedone a great job. you'll have to sit in ahammock before you go. arden myrin: i'd loveto sit in a hammock. shelby: that one's themost comfortable. arden myrin: this one? this is like the party swing. oh, i feel good aboutmyself in here. it's like everything's safeand is going to actually finally work out in life.

i feel so ready to move intothe mckibbin lofts. i'll just move intoyour swing. i don't even need to sleepin the guest room. well, i wouldn't be a very goodhouse guest if i didn't come with a housewarmingpresent. so i actually brewed you upmy own vintage of wine. i don't know if you can tell. that's me. shelby: you made this?
